Your Saving Grace

Allow me to honor this unusual and beautiful song by Jimmy Webb. Perhaps I am obsessed: I have collected over 50 different cover versions of this song, beyond the original 1968 hit version sung by Richard Harris and Donna Summer's 1978 disco hit. I have played many cover versions on my KHSU music program. Eventually, on this webpage I will include more about Jimmy Webb himself, and hopefully quote his book Tunesmith: Inside the Art of Songwriting. In it he tells how he created the song on the grand piano he bought with the royalties for his song "Up, Up and Away," made a hit by the Fifth Dimension. Check out my links to related websites, images and whatnot. Thank you for your interest in this song that is unlike any other!

[I have made two green cakes in my life. I left one out in the rain. I ate it anyway.]

-- Your Saving Grace

[The above is the earliest album cover I have seen that was designed after the song itself. However, this version of the song is not the best one...cringe....]

Images of the real
MacArthur Park, Los Angeles:

And then there is MacArthur Park in ARKANSAS!
[Now where's that freakin' cake???]

MacArthur Park

By Jimmy Webb
Originally recorded by Richard Harris in 1968 (#2 in US, #4 in UK)

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead, as we followed in the dance
between the parted pages and were pressed
in love's hot fevered iron like a striped pair of pants

---

CHORUS:
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark,
all the sweet green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain...
I don't think that I can take it,
'cause it took so long to bake it,
and I'll never have that recipe again, oh no...

---

I recall the yellow cotton dress
foaming like a wave on the ground around your knees
Birds like tender babies in your hands
and the old men playing checkers by the trees

[REPEAT CHORUS]

BRIDGE:
There will be another song for me, for I will sing it
There will be another dream for me; someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
and never let you catch me looking at the sun
and after all the loves in my life,
after all the loves in my life,
you'll still be the one...
I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes, and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
and my passions flow like rivers through the sky
and after all the loves of my life,
oh, after all the loves of my life,
I'll be thinking of you, and wondering why...

[INSTRUMENTAL ROCK INTERLUDE]

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark,
all the sweet green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain...
I don't think that I can take it,
'cause it took so long to bake it,
and I'll never have that recipe again, oh no...
Oh no!
No! No! No!
